Re: GC7G5GD 80 caches totalling 24,901 miles

[Resolved] GC7G5GD 80 caches totalling 24,901 miles
December 18, 2017 02:44AM
The goal of the checker is to find 80 caches where the distance from the cacher's home location to the cache adds up to 24,901 miles - or the circumference of the earth.

Thanks,

I'm sorry, but a checker can't be made based on the cacher's home location. From the READ FIRST thread:

What a checker can not do
* The checkers does not have access to the user's home coordinates. Challenges are not allowed to be based upon them either, and haven't been allowed to for several years. This is a matter of integrity.

If you want to make your challenge about cache-to-cache distance a checker can be made.

I see now that you don't see the home coordinates.

Using the distance between caches would be reasonable. Is it possible to write a checker so that the distance between 80 caches would equal 24,901 miles? I'm curious to see what the results for me would be.

Thank you,
Faye

It is possible but it may take too long to find the correct set of caches if they can be freely chosen. If caches should be chosen sequentially, then it is fast to check and the checker is easy to implement. Anyway, it would be wise to ask from your local reviewer is this kind of challenge allowed.

Here is an example which is not what you are asking but somehow related.

I see it would be easier for you to use sequential caches, but since they need to average 312 miles from each other to get to the correct sum, most people won't qualify that way (I'm sure I wouldn't). The old way would be easier to just count up distances from the stat page, but a checker is now required. I continue to assert that the new challenge rules from geocaching.com have taken most of the fun out of challenges. Maybe this won't work under the current constraints.

Thanks,

You could use the challenge cache itself as a fixed point for distance calculation instead of the home. But there may be too many combinations to check depending on how close to the target distance you need to come.

Can we use the distances on the "distance to find" chart on the statistics page for each cacher? Then as long as they had 80 over 500 miles, they would easily qualify. If they have less, then some number that would be considered 500 and some number considered to be 250 or 100 would be needed. So at least 60 that are 250 miles (15,000) plus 20 that are 500 miles (10,000) would work. Is that an option?

Using the cache location distorts things for people not from the area, although I suppose it is the next best option.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Checker have no access to any web-page. Operation is based on your finds. For example you could use the first found cache if the bogus is not desired.

If the distance is allowed to be larger than 24,901 miles (instead of equal 24,901 miles) then there is no difficulties to check the results.

You could use the location of the challenge cache as the center point.

Look at GC72R77 as an example.

Yes, let's use the cache location as the center point, and then they have to find no more than 80 caches that equal at least 24,901 miles. The total distance can be greater, but it can't be less. The total number of caches can be less than 80, but it can't be more than 80.

Thanks for your suggestions,

This is almost ready. The checker needs coordinates to the cache to make correct measurements.

You can try this checker.

https://project-gc.com/Challenges/GC7G5GD/30849

The starting coordinate is set to N 43° 10.267 W 070° 59.928

When I use the checker, it shows me 7 caches that total to 28,365 miles - not the 24901 required. Granted, I have another 7000+ caches to get the last few miles, but it should show an 8th or 9th cache to bring me over the total. Can you adjust it so it shows MORE than 24,901 miles - never less.

Thanks,

28365 is more than 24901. It is actually 3464 miles more than requested.

OK - My brain wasn't processing the numbers correctly.
