[Work in progress] Checkers for GC51B6F, GC5KMYB & GC55BE6
September 14, 2021 01:57AM
Hi
Could we have checkers for these three challenges:

GC51B6F - Explorer 162 Challenge
GC5KMYB - Explorer 171 Challenge
GC55BE6 - Explorer 172 Challenge

These are all "Explorer" challenges for which you have to find a cache in each of a given number of the 1km grid squares of an Ordnance Survey Explorer map. We already have checkers for some of the other Explorer challenges, for example GC5GPTF Explorer 160 Challenge. I would imagine it would be pretty straightforward to modify that checker to produce a version that handles each of these.

Thanks

It is possible but not as straightforward as you think because each coordinate needs converting and set in a polygon script.
At the moment I am still on a mobile and not in a position to start the process.
I estimate that those checkers can be made towards the end of september

Thanks - end of September would be great

Hi
Is there any update on when these checkers might be done?

Thanks

Good that you remind me, but they are taking up a lot of my time ( 6 hours for each of them) so I really did not get spare time yet. But they will come

Hi vogelbird

Thanks for that. I've discovered that the first of these GC51B6F (Explorer 162 Challenge) was unfortunately archived by its owner today. So there is no point doing that one now.
The other two GC5KMYB & GC55BE6 still need a checker though

Sorry, I have not forgotten this request but I simply did not get spare time to make those checkers. To make them I do need 6 to 8 hours uninterrupted worktime not to make any mistakes. When there are mistakens it is virtual impossible to spot them.
Summer season is starting which will mean that I even have less time due to the fact that I will be afloat and with limited internet connnections.

I will keep the request alive and if there is a volunteer who has time feel free to make them

Checkers are now ready:

162 - https://project-gc.com/Challenges/GC51B6F/79261
171 - https://project-gc.com/Challenges/GC5KMYB/79262
172 - https://project-gc.com/Challenges/GC55BE6/79263

If there are any other Ordnance Survey Map challenges needing checkers, please let me know. This script is much better than the previous script (which required us to manually convert all 651 OS grid references to latitude and longitude, including the datum conversion) since it requires only the reference of the south west square.

Hi Hugh
Thanks very much for doing those challenge checkers. I've had a look through all of the Ordnance Survey Explorer map challenges to see which ones do and don't have checkers.

The following appear to not have checkers
Explorer 130 GC501MB
Explorer 131 GC501T6
Explorer 145 GC3ETP0
Explorer 158 GC4R5NX
Explorer 167 GC4QQBE
Explorer 168 GC4QQB6
Explorer 179 GC4QQB8
Explorer 180 GC55MY3
Explorer 190 GC4WZFP
Explorer 204 GC4ZDMN
Explorer 205 GC4ZDEA
Explorer 224 GC499P8
Explorer 232 GC42JQ2
Explorer 279 GC5ACTX
Explorer 306 GC5NQV7

I've spotted that Explorers 130 and 131 aren't simply a rectangle of grid squares (they both have an area missing). This is relevant to your final point where you say that now you just need the reference of the south west square.

I will set up 145 to 306 sometime tomorrow, but will have to make a minor adjustment to the script for 130 to 131. Shouldn't take too long (= a couple days -- I recognize that this thread has been up for a number of years now...)

Did the first couple:

145 - https://project-gc.com/Challenges/GC3ETP0/79282
158 - https://project-gc.com/Challenges/GC4R5NX/79283
167 - https://project-gc.com/Challenges/GC4QQBE/79284

I am noticing some differences between what my script reports and what the GSAK macro is reporting. I believe that my script is correct, since there are some caches that GSAK appears to place on the incorrect page (assuming that the OS grid ref that appears on the cache listing is "100% correct"). But I want to confirm before I proceed.

Hi Hügh
Thanks for those. You will probably notice this when you come to them but I've had a look through the list and found that 224, 232 and 279 are also (like 130 & 131) not simple rectangles
Cheers

Ah, thank you. I was trying to think of the most ergonomic way to handle the non-rectangular ones so it is good to be aware of those so I can consider them too.

Re this one
Explorer 306 GC5NQV7 - https://project-gc.com/Challenges/GC5NQV7/79466
You have to find 150 caches in 150 squares. I got first on that one in 2015 when I had more than 150 finds. Running the checker now informs me I have 278 finds in that area but I do not qualify for the challenge.

Apologies, that was my error. You should be good-to-go now.

Oh I've left this for far too long again and let school start back up. I'll look at this during this week, if I have time.

Hurrah! It's great to see these are slowly being sorted. Trying to sort these on GSAK has been a nightmare for some!
