[Resolved] Continent checker

[Resolved] Continent checker
July 18, 2018 07:08PM
Hello,

I need help adjusting a checker.

I have the following challenges pending based on these changes to the checker

GC7TPM1(2 continents)
GC7TPKJ (3)
GC7TPK7 (4)
GC7TPK0 (5)

The reviewer wants me to have these changes bc there are some errors not matching Groundspeak
1. Canary Islands needs to be a part of Spain and therefore Europe
2. FIRST, the North America list is wrong to current country ids as used on Geocaching.com
It used to be St. Martin, (a reference to the entire island), now, it's correct as the two separate countries that occupy the island - Dutch Sint Maarten, and French Saint Martin.
Generally, along with the rest of the Caribbean Islands, this part of North America.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Tracy

Hi Tracy,

This sort of change would need to be done by the script writer (in this case alarobric). On your checker page, there should be an envelope icon next to "Script name: Continent checker (by alarobric)" which will allow you to contact them directly.

As far as #1 goes, Canary Islands caches seem to be showing up as country=Spain, region=Islas Canarias on PGC. The script tries to re-assign country=Spain, region=Canarias to Africa, but since there's been a change to the region name that won't actually do anything. It's very much debatable whether they should be counted as Africa or Europe, though, since they are geographically one and politically the other.

Reviewer here; trying to assist in resolving the "debatable" point. Continents, per se, are not a valid basis for challenges as they are not countries, provinces, states or counties. However, a challenge based on finding caches from a list of countries is permissible. So, I would not worry about debating the right geography characterization of Islas Canarias. It is just a country on a list and, as such, it's fine to include with Spain (Europe).

Thank you very much for your response, my reviewer actually sent this request to ground speak and they approved this challenge with the changes to the checker required. In addition, on my Geocaching page I am required to list all the countries in each of the continents. These Are the requested changes made to the challenge tracker as per my reviewer

Missing countries:
AFRICA: Lesotho
NORTH AMERICA: Curaçao, Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba, Sint Maarten

Sint Maarten is new as a Geocaching.com country ID. It's not new as a country.

Thanks for your assistance in this situation.

Hello there, I have added some additional adjustments at the Riviera requested. I have contacted the person that wrote the script but have not heard back. What do I need to do with this person is no longer active or does not respond?

The relevant script can be customised by specifying the correct configuration, i.e. no need to contact the script writer. You won't be able to change the cloned configurations though, so you'll have to request new checkers along with the changes you need to reallocate countries to the correct continents you require. Please reply here with those requirements and we'll be happy to create you some new checkers.

Thank you so much! I would need checkers for 2, 3, 4, and 5 continents:

These were the requested changes from the original checker

Missing countries that need to be added:
AFRICA: Lesotho
NORTH AMERICA: Curaçao, Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba, Sint Maarten

Here are the GC numbers

GC7TPM1(2 continents)
GC7TPKJ (3)
GC7TPK7 (4)
GC7TPK0 (5)

Thanks again for all your help

Okay, Lesotho is part of Africa already in the script that I'll be using. However, I can't find the other countries. Please provide GC codes for caches in those countries so I can identify that they're labelled under on Project-GC.

Also, another area was the Canary Islands. it needs to be part of Spain (europe) versus Africa.

Likewise, we need a GC code in that country to pinpoint the correct name on Project-GC to use.

So sorry, no sure how that happened.

Try these
Bonaire GC2PKMK
Sint Marteen = GC1ATRZ
Re: Continent checker
July 23, 2018 04:28PM
Caracua - GC1X9TR
Bonaire - GC6AQVA
Sint Eusatian - GC10RX5
Sint Maarten - GC4C3HZ
Re: Continent checker

GC6AQVA appears to be in Florida USA, not Bonaire?
GC4C3HZ appears to be in Netherlands, not Sint Maarten?

Sorry I did not see this feedback

So Bonaire was a typo, I made an A instead of a 4. The actual GC is GC6AQV4

Sint Marteen I have the following: I did not look closely enough at the island divide

GC3WXNJ, GC48RVT

Hope this helps. Thanks again

With respect to these 4 challenges I have tried the checkers and have the following issues :-
Above there is a discussion around whether The Canaries are part of Africa or Europe and the feedback from the Reviewer was - "I would not worry about debating the right geography characterization of Islas Canarias. It is just a country on a list and, as such, it's fine to include with Spain (Europe)" so if we are saying that as 'Spain' the Canary Islands count for Europe as Spain is listed under Europe - that is fine - however the checker shows a cache on the Canaries as Africa !!! - I can not find The Canaries listed, though obviously Spain is - so the checker output (see below) would give incorrect response

Also are locationless caches counted for these 4 challenges
I did the following checks on the 4 checkers as listed and the results are as follows :-

for 2 continents -
**Oceania**-Australia 2005-09-08 - Locationless (Reverse) Cache[3 Steps Around the World (GC5525)](http://coord.info/GC5525)

Checkers modified to exclude Locationless (Reverse) Cache.
Re: Continent checker
August 15, 2018 02:33AM
PS: you need to include the word "challenge" in the cache name for GC7TPM1 as the checker is automatically disabled if you don't have that in the cache name.
