Re: Tweak to an existing checker requested for GC8DPVD please

[Resolved] Tweak to an existing checker requested for GC8DPVD please
September 17, 2019 10:25AM
Hi there,

There is an existing checker used in GC44VT8 - Bakers Dozen Challenge (Wellington) (New Zealand)which checks for 13 consecutive months of 50+ finds.

Can I get a similar checker that looks for 20 consecutive finds for my new Challenge GC8DPVD please?

Thanks,

TwigNZ (John)

try it here:
https://project-gc.com/Challenges/GC8DPVD/45121

this is the code for the checker

marked as 'awaiting feedback'

Doesn't that violate the time-limited guideline?

Hi pieterix,

Why would it?

There is no time limit to being able to qualify. Any 20 consecutive months will do, from May 2000 to any date in the future. There are no restrictions to existing or new players.

Just my thoughts.

Cheers,

John

As per rule 9 of the challenge cache guidelines:

Time-Limited: Not Acceptable: Time-limited caching: as in some number of finds per day, week, month, or year. Example, Busy Day, 50 finds in a day, 500 finds in a month, etc.

And yet that same guideline (number 9) states that it is ok to maintain streaks of X number of caches...Maintaining a finds streak, at least one find per day, up to 365 days.
This is just a streak concerning months rather than days.

I know. Just quoting what's in the guidelines.

Try to publish it and see the reviewer opinion. If the reviewer says that it's ok, there is no problem. Otherwiser ask me for deleting the tag and reuse the gccode for another cache.
There is also third way - you can create a "non-challenge cache", where the fulfilling the rules is RECOMMENDED but OPTIONAL like this one:
https://coord.info/GC7HF1M
Quote

This is a NON-CHALLENGE Cache. The Cache IS at the Posted Coordinates but you SHOULD complete the challenge before logging a find.
...
Because this challenge is too complex for Groundspeak to understand, you may find and log this cache without meeting the challenge but be careful - you may end up with a string of DNFs as a consequence.

Hi again jpavlik,

Thanks for your reply. I'll take my chances with my reviewer where I hope common sense will prevail.
I accept your point about the non-challenge, but it's not a satisfactory solution to what I'd like to achieve. I'm putting this cache out to celebrate my 2000th find, which I will be getting tomorrow, and it's heavily influenced by that cache and the one I got for my 1500th, plus non-challenge caches are not highly thought of in my experience here in NZ as few people treat them as anything more than a standard Trad.

Thanks for all your help.

Hi jpavlik,

Thank you for your speedy efforts..

It certainly works fine if you do qualify, with the output showing you your find counts for the 20 months.

But I'm wondering if there could be an improvement made to the output script if you don't qualify?
At the moment you get nothing, so you are left not knowing how close you may be to completing the challenge, or ever were to it if your best streak was in the past.

Not super important, but I've seen checkers that give more info in the event of not meeting the requirements.

Cheers,

John
