Re: Checkers for GC51B6F, GC5KMYB & GC55BE6

[Resolved] Checkers for GC51B6F, GC5KMYB & GC55BE6
September 13, 2021 11:57PM
Hi
Could we have checkers for these three challenges:

GC51B6F - Explorer 162 Challenge
GC5KMYB - Explorer 171 Challenge
GC55BE6 - Explorer 172 Challenge

These are all "Explorer" challenges for which you have to find a cache in each of a given number of the 1km grid squares of an Ordnance Survey Explorer map. We already have checkers for some of the other Explorer challenges, for example GC5GPTF Explorer 160 Challenge. I would imagine it would be pretty straightforward to modify that checker to produce a version that handles each of these.

Thanks

It is possible but not as straightforward as you think because each coordinate needs converting and set in a polygon script.
At the moment I am still on a mobile and not in a position to start the process.
I estimate that those checkers can be made towards the end of september

Hi
Is there any update on when these checkers might be done?

Thanks

Good that you remind me, but they are taking up a lot of my time ( 6 hours for each of them) so I really did not get spare time yet. But they will come

Hi vogelbird

Thanks for that. I've discovered that the first of these GC51B6F (Explorer 162 Challenge) was unfortunately archived by its owner today. So there is no point doing that one now.
The other two GC5KMYB & GC55BE6 still need a checker though

Sorry, I have not forgotten this request but I simply did not get spare time to make those checkers. To make them I do need 6 to 8 hours uninterrupted worktime not to make any mistakes. When there are mistakens it is virtual impossible to spot them.
Summer season is starting which will mean that I even have less time due to the fact that I will be afloat and with limited internet connnections.

I will keep the request alive and if there is a volunteer who has time feel free to make them

Checkers are now ready:

162 - https://project-gc.com/Challenges/GC51B6F/79261
171 - https://project-gc.com/Challenges/GC5KMYB/79262
172 - https://project-gc.com/Challenges/GC55BE6/79263

If there are any other Ordnance Survey Map challenges needing checkers, please let me know. This script is much better than the previous script (which required us to manually convert all 651 OS grid references to latitude and longitude, including the datum conversion) since it requires only the reference of the south west square.

Hi Hugh
Thanks very much for doing those challenge checkers. I've had a look through all of the Ordnance Survey Explorer map challenges to see which ones do and don't have checkers.

The following appear to not have checkers
Explorer 130 GC501MB
Explorer 131 GC501T6
Explorer 145 GC3ETP0
Explorer 158 GC4R5NX
Explorer 167 GC4QQBE
Explorer 168 GC4QQB6
Explorer 179 GC4QQB8
Explorer 180 GC55MY3
Explorer 190 GC4WZFP
Explorer 204 GC4ZDMN
Explorer 205 GC4ZDEA
Explorer 224 GC499P8
Explorer 232 GC42JQ2
Explorer 279 GC5ACTX
Explorer 306 GC5NQV7

I've spotted that Explorers 130 and 131 aren't simply a rectangle of grid squares (they both have an area missing). This is relevant to your final point where you say that now you just need the reference of the south west square.

I will set up 145 to 306 sometime tomorrow, but will have to make a minor adjustment to the script for 130 to 131. Shouldn't take too long (= a couple days -- I recognize that this thread has been up for a number of years now...)
Re: Checkers for GC51B6F, GC5KMYB & GC55BE6
July 11, 2023 03:21AM
Did the first couple:

145 - https://project-gc.com/Challenges/GC3ETP0/79282
158 - https://project-gc.com/Challenges/GC4R5NX/79283
167 - https://project-gc.com/Challenges/GC4QQBE/79284

I am noticing some differences between what my script reports and what the GSAK macro is reporting. I believe that my script is correct, since there are some caches that GSAK appears to place on the incorrect page (assuming that the OS grid ref that appears on the cache listing is "100% correct"). But I want to confirm before I proceed.

Hi Hügh
Thanks for those. You will probably notice this when you come to them but I've had a look through the list and found that 224, 232 and 279 are also (like 130 & 131) not simple rectangles
Cheers

Ah, thank you. I was trying to think of the most ergonomic way to handle the non-rectangular ones so it is good to be aware of those so I can consider them too.

Re this one
Explorer 306 GC5NQV7 - https://project-gc.com/Challenges/GC5NQV7/79466
You have to find 150 caches in 150 squares. I got first on that one in 2015 when I had more than 150 finds. Running the checker now informs me I have 278 finds in that area but I do not qualify for the challenge.

We have looked at the ones above in the list and the ones we can see that don't have checkers are below.

- Explorer 224 GC499P8 - non-rectangular -
- Explorer 232 GC42JQ2 - non-rectangular -
- Explorer 279 GC5ACTX - non-rectangular -
- Explorer 130 GC501MB - non-rectangular -
- Explorer 131 GC501T6

Sorry, yes, please do. I think the only ones left are ones with non-rectangular ranges (the pages are rectangles, but the total span isn’t) and I haven’t had the time to sit down and update the code to handle that. You’re welcome to fork or edit, whichever is easier.
Re: Checkers for GC51B6F, GC5KMYB & GC55BE6
October 08, 2024 02:05AM
Alright, I've made an attempt on one of these to make a non-rectangular one... Trying to translate between Hugh's script, the GSAK macro and the OS grid references has my mind swimming a bit... it might be correct. But y'all seem to be an expert on whether these are correct or not - so if you could check this one out, and give feedback (before I associate it), I'd appreciate it.

https://project-gc.com/Challenges//92793

(and if so, I'll merge this into Hugh's main script, and re-tag it there).

You didn't say which one this script covers but it appears to be Explorer 224 GC499P8

I'll try it out with some people I know

I've only found one cache in this area and it correctly says I don't qualify
simplysup easily qualifies (577 finds)
drsolly easily qualifies (463 finds)
qrang doesn't qualify (149 finds)
SeekingSalters doesn't qualify (74 finds)

Looks fine to me

Okay, based on your positive feedback, I've now updated Hugh's script, and retagged this one (yes, it was #224).

I'll work on the others... should be a few days or less hopefully.
Re: Checkers for GC51B6F, GC5KMYB & GC55BE6

I have run the Gsak macro for Explorer 224 Challenge https://coord.info/GC499P8 and it returns a qualification of 224 finds. When I run the new checker on Project GC it returns a negative with only 215 finds. So something is amiss with this one.
Re: Checkers for GC51B6F, GC5KMYB & GC55BE6
October 09, 2024 01:49AM
Is it possible for you to give me your GSAK output (even just a screenshot?). I can't install GSAK on this computer, and thus, have a hard time verifying anything. I'll disable it in the meantime.
Re: Checkers for GC51B6F, GC5KMYB & GC55BE6
October 09, 2024 01:27PM
Yes, this helps... I've already found one discrepancy - I think GC91FMT, (TL 02928 74988) should be in the TL 02000 74000 grid square... which it is in the checker, but in GSAK, it's in counted in TL 02000 75000 square. So, I'll have to look at the code and figure out why exactly that is (luckily, I can look at the code of the macro, even if it can't run it).
Re: Checkers for GC51B6F, GC5KMYB & GC55BE6
October 09, 2024 07:49PM
Interesting. So you are saying that for GC91FMT, (TL 02928 74988) it looks like GSAK is wrong and the new checker is right
Re: Checkers for GC51B6F, GC5KMYB & GC55BE6
October 10, 2024 04:52PM
So, I can't see the DDMS -> OSG conversion code in GSAK, since that happens internally in its code, not in the script. But, that cache should be in the same grid square as GC3B8DN (as reported by geocaching.com), and you don't have another find in the square... so that looks like the GSAK output is wrong... unless I'm misreading the output GC code (resolution isn't high enough - so I am kind of just guessing what the GC codes are).

In addition to that, your GSAK output shows some find in SP 80000 86000, and SP 84000 86000, but looking at map compare in PGC, I don't see that you have a find in those squares. I'm assuming there's some other discrepancies accounting for the differences, but I'm going to say that the checker is correct, and your GSAK output isn't, so I'm going to re-enable it.

Re: Checkers for GC51B6F, GC5KMYB & GC55BE6
October 08, 2024 11:12PM
Ok I'll have a look at your two new ones

Explorer 232
I've found none in this map region and the checker correctly reports the same
Qrang has only 62 grid squares with finds so doesn't qualify
SimplySup easily qualifies (393 squares with finds)

Looking at the cache page the last one to log a find was lostfoundlostagain
They posted a screenshot of their GSAK results on 8 May 2023 showing 232 finds. Your checker now shows 266
Seems fair enough given they have cached for another year and a half since then

Explorer 279
I have only found 1 cache in this area and the checker correctly reports that I don't qualify
SimplySup doesn't qualify this time (only 84 grid squares filled)

Looking at the cache page the last one to log a find and post their proof was Clan-Wallace (five years ago!)
They had 285 grid squares on 31 Mar 2019. Your checker shows that now as 310.

Both of these look good to me
Colin

Hi
With regard to Explorer 279 Doncaster I can report that using the GSAK macro and the project GC checker returns a result of 66. So for me this one is working correctly.
Re: Checkers for GC51B6F, GC5KMYB & GC55BE6
October 11, 2024 01:46AM
Alrighty... these might be the last two?

130: https://project-gc.com/Challenges/GC501MB/92821
131: https://project-gc.com/Challenges/GC501T6/92862

Holy crap I actually have finds in #130. Only 124 more squares to go............................

Anyhow, test them out, and let us know - hopefully these ones match your GSAK outputs.
Re: Checkers for GC51B6F, GC5KMYB & GC55BE6
October 11, 2024 10:18PM
Ok I'll check those two

Explorer 130
The checker says that I have only 20 grid squares and don't qualify. I've checked with the GSAK macro and that agrees that I have 20 grid squares
I've tried the checker with a few other people
qrang has 234 grid squares and so easily qualifies
drsolly has 142 grid squares and qualifies as well

Explorer 131
The checker says that I have only 60 grid squares and don't qualify. I've checked with the GSAK macro and that agrees that I have 60 grid squares
I've tried the checker with a few other people
qrang has 397 grid squares and so easily qualifies
drsolly has 200 grid squares and qualifies as well

So I think these two are fine
Re: Checkers for GC51B6F, GC5KMYB & GC55BE6
October 12, 2024 03:54AM
Does that mean we can finally mark this thread as complete?
Re: Checkers for GC51B6F, GC5KMYB & GC55BE6
October 12, 2024 04:38PM
Yes this thread has been a bit of a marathon hasn't it. Thanks for all the work that you have done on it. Just-Us-Two has also been commenting on this thread recently so I think before closing it we ought to wait a couple of days to see if they want to do any further tests.

Could I just ask for one further little thing before we close this. I own a cache from this Explorer series - Explorer 160 Challenge (GC5GPTF). It already has a checker and that was done way back in 2018, and that's all fine. If I run it using my name it gives the example log below:

[colincactus](https://www.geocaching.com/profile/?u=colincactus) has used [Project-GC](https://project-gc.com/Challenges/GC5GPTF/31228 "Project-GC Challenge Checker") to see if they qualified for this challenge and they did.

I have found caches in 257 areas (160 required)

If I do the same with one of the challenges that have been created in this thread - Explorer 145 Challenge (GC3ETP0) it gives the example log below:

[colincactus](https://www.geocaching.com/profile/?u=colincactus) has used [Project-GC](https://project-gc.com/Challenges/GC3ETP0/79282 "Project-GC Challenge Checker") to see if they qualified for this challenge and they did.

Note it doesn't have the line saying how many areas that you've found caches in and how many are required. The script output says I have found 229 but that information doesn't get included in the example log.

So long story short - would it be possible for you to add this line to the example logs for each of the challenges in this thread.
Re: Checkers for GC51B6F, GC5KMYB & GC55BE6
October 16, 2024 01:32PM
Sorry, this took like 2 seconds, I just forgot to do it... :). I've now added the line to the example log....

No word from @Just-Us-Two.

Maybe we can mark this as complete, and if they come back with issues, I can solve them?

Yes I think these are all fine and you can mark this request as complete now.
As you say if any further issues arise they can be dealt with then.
