Re: Cloned checker not working pre-publication

Cloned checker not working pre-publication
May 05, 2020 12:50PM
A few months ago I cloned a checker and tied it to my challenge and used the bottom/third method for adding it to the cache page. I never clicked the link, assuming it worked. Things have finally eased up in my state so I'm comfortable submitting the cache for publication but the reviewer said the link doesn't work. Sure enough, the message I receive says that Safari can't open the page because the page's address isn't valid. Below is the copied information provided from the cloned checker. Also, I know the cloned checker is still here but I can't locate it to attempt one of the other 2 options. Suggestions/help? Thanks in advance.

Checker is working fine. You simply pasted the wrong code. Try this code:

<a href="https://project-gc.com/Challenges/GC8JF1Q/48368"><img src="https://cdn2.project-gc.com/Images/Checker/48368"; title="Project-GC Challenge checker" alt="PGC Checker"></a>

Hmm, almost looks identical to yours, but try mine anyway. And make sure you're editing the description in Source mode, ie. that the Source button above the description is showing green.

For some reason, it worked. I rarely create my cache pages out of source mode. I also didn't see any difference between what you posted and what I copied from the link that project-gc provided but it worked. I also posted it as plain text (not used it as a link or as an image) and now get two separate clickable links (one to the checker and one to the image). Weird. I initially added it to the cache page as a link, which rendered it as invalid (did it again, just to verify).

Finally, will the information from the project-gc page fill in (after the GC#) with anything instead of just providing the ()?

Using the "preferred" link, I attempted to use the link insertion for the cache page and get an invalid address, as mentioned previously. Tried it as an image and got nothing and then tried it as plain text and got two separate clickable links. I'm going to switch over to Google Chrome to see if Safari might be the issue.

Just make sure you edit it in Source mode, as indicated above.

Project-GC doesn't have access to unpublished caches, hence the "?" you see there currently. Once your challenge cache is published (or within a reasonable time thereafter), it will automatically show your cache name there.

Chrome provides the exact same situations as already described. I copy the entire provided link from the checker. In the edit mode on geocaching.com (and source mode within the edit cache page mode), I select the link icon and paste the link into the url box, making sure to change to the proper protocol (I also used http to see if it mattered). The output shows the entire link on the cache page (edit mode still) but all of it underlined, showing me that at least it's doing what it's supposed to. Once I save and preview, all I get is the previously mentioned underlined text (no image to see in either the preferred/suggested link or the second link), which is the copied link information.

Once clicked on the underlined text, I get - This site can’t be reached%3Ca%20href%3D%22https’s server IP address could not be found.
DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN

Copying it as plain text at least gets me to the cloned checker, but there's no image displayed and clicking on that link says "page not found" and then redirects me to the dashboard for project-gc.

Even the very first suggested method, when added as a link to the cache page via the link button in source mode, provides an invalid address notification. The ONLY way I can get to the cache page is to enter the information as plain text.

Think I got it. Thanks for all your help! Dear lord that took too much experimentation to get things to resolve. It seems it's user error on my part.
