If we travel from home to a country we have already cached in, and cache in a different area, will the mileage be added to our travelling total?

I think that this badge is calculated as distance between your home coords and farest cache you've found. Not as total sum of travelled kilometers/miles.
If you want calculate distance between caches, you can do that e.g. with your own  travel bug that visits every cache you have ever found.

You are correct about the badge. It has a maximum distance which is to the other side of the earth from your home coordinates.

The total distance between caches logged is available as "Total cache-to-cache distance" in the Profile Statistics, under "Some numbers".
