I've noticed a number of challenge caches on the map that show they have checkers (with some showing I've met the challenge), yet when I go to the actual cache page, there is no checker.  How can this be? And, how do I find and run such a checker to gather the satisfying data?

e.g., GC4Y2RV, GC5RXP5, GC4Y2TC

It is perfectly possible to create a checker on Project-GC without it being linked in the HTML code on the cache page. To find these checkers, go to https://project-gc.com/Tools/Challenges and enter the GC code in the search field (and make sure that the country field is correctly set).

Also, if you use the Project-GC web browser extension (https://project-gc.com/Home/UserScript), any existing checker will be linked on the cache page even if the cache owner hasn't done that.

Thanks for the clarification. And also for the info about the Project-GC web browser extension. Got it up and running and must say I like a couple of the features.  What I like most, however, is the quickness with which Project-GC folk respond to posts regarding the functionality of the software.
