Don't use any special characters other than a period to separate the minutes and seconds.  You can use spaces.

I tried it by copying and pasting a set of coordinates from a cache page exactly as displayed and the special characters didn't make any difference so on the search page it doesn't seem to matter.  When I told it to use my home location, I noticed the apostrophes were present but not the alpha-numeric you mentioned.  I am using latest version of Chrome on a laptop running Win 7.

That's correct, but geocaching.com adds the apostrophes itself when I use the coordinates of my home location.
Please see my answer below - it is a bug, but a GC one - report it to GC via the help option

This happened to me a few weeks ago. If you select 'search from home co-ords' it was after this that the problem occurred. It displays the co-ords with an addition apostrophe - like N 51° 17.224' E 001° 34.553' - Essentially the apostrophe was then being replaced by the code that represents it. As a result when you went to search further the code was getting in the way.
Copying and pasting the home co-ords and deleting the apostrophes got you round it but quite a pfaff.

If you do your own manual search with your own inputted co-ords it was OK.
This was reported to GC and they have since rectified it (for me at least) - I have just checked and have noted it still works fine for me. Not sure if this is a regional issue.
It would be worth putting in a bug report via the help facility on GC. They will deal eventually

Not sure why this is being reported here though as this is a GC bug issue not a PGC one

I think people confuse PGC as being some affiliate of geocaching.com.  It's a common error.
