No it does not. It uses number of words, removes some common cheats (like Lorem Ipsum etc) and then divides it with number of geocaches excluding lab caches. The decimals are dropped so 3.56 words per cache becomes 3 in the Author badge.

Interesting issue - does it look at repetitive logs such as the auto-generated ones that give a whole list of stats and include a bland one liner for the relevant cache and take the repetitiveness into account (i.e not include it) or do you get the highest level because the copy/paste autogenerated spiel has over 120 words for each and every log ?
@Deepdiggingmole
I know that "some basic filtering" is used but I don't know the exact details of what common cheats are removed, I've been told that any log with "Lorem Ipsum" in it counts as zero words for the whole log and I'm pretty sure I've read that "s p a c i n g  o u t" the words in individual letters to "make more words" don't increase the word count either.

Repetitive logs are measured(/shamed) by the "Log similarity-score" (last row under "some numbers" in the Finds tab in the Profile Stats) tho. ;) So I don't think they are removed from the Author badge also.
