Enhancement: NESW include Centroid

Question

The report https://project-gc.com/Tools/MapNESW includes 6 of the 7 geographical extremes. Centroid is missing. Yes I can effectively get the data from elsewhere in Project-GC, but really, it belongs here.

Could we get it added please. At least for the country/region/county, if not for the centre/radius.

Especially as I am now working on extremes as a personal challenge!

No, this is not possible. The MapNESW tool computes the extremes on-the-fly, and allows arbitrary filtering, eg. you can use it to find the northernmost Multi-cache in an area or the easternmost geocache with the "Tree climbing" attribute.

The centroid computation is far, far more expensive, and so we only compute it once per day and without any filters applied. This data is made available at https://project-gc.com/Tools/MapExtremes. (Incidentally, this is also why the MapExtremes tool doesn't allow any filtering of any kind.)

MapExtremes is okay, but I was hoping for one tool, like NESW, that shows both finds and unfound. Yes, I can get the finds from Profile Stats.

I suspected it was expensive, which is why I suggested country/region/county, and not centre/radius, which is the same data in Profile Stats - the daily computed data could be simply stored in a table to be read by the NESW tool, rather than NESW computing it on the fly (which must be how MapExtremes and Profile Stats work). That does make NESW a little less responsive to changes, admittedly.

That's the issue -- if we've precomputed the centroid to be a Traditional cache, but you apply a Multi-cache filter, what should we show?

Can you elaborate on what you mean by "shows both finds and unfound"? It's not clear to me what you're trying to do.

I see you point about selecting cache type. That does make centroid not feasible.


In my case it was geotrip planning, if we are going *there*, it would be advantageous to pick up any extremes along the way. But mapExtremes only shows some caches - I can't see the ones I have found to know if it is feasible for the team to head there so the rest of the team can claim the find. NESW does show both finds and unfound, so we can look at going there even if I have found that cache. But not for centroid.

There are other ways to do this, of course. But adding centroid to NESW or adding found caches to  MapExtremes... Map Extremes supports found caches!! My dilemma is solved!
