Why isn't the county map allowing me to add (or remove) caches to (from) my virtual GPS?

I tried multiple counties, but this is where I first hit the glitch:

https://project-gc.com/Tools/MapCounties?post_crc_country=United+States&post_crc_county=Henry+County+%28IL%29&post_crc_region=Illinois&pre_crc_country=United+States&pre_crc_region=Illinois&pre_pr_profileName=javthrowr&submit=Filter

I was trying to add geocaches to my virtual GPS but it is not working (removing doesn't work either). I click on the cache, hit the virtual GPS button and nothing happens.

I can click on a cache, click on the coordinates which takes me to the live map and then add them. But from county maps, nothing.

I'm using Google Chrome, Version 145.0.7632.75 (Official Build) (64-bit).

I updated my Google Chrome to Version 145.0.7632.117 (Official Build) (64-bit) and I still have the issue.

Incorrect county data for British Columbia, Canada

I was using the "MapCompare" tool the other day, and noticed that when filtering to Canada / British Columbia / Greater Vancouver, the results included geocaches in the vicinity of Sechelt, Lund, and Powell River:

Indeed, inspecting the Maps generated by “ProfileStats” reveals that some regions are considered to be part of Greater Vancouver (note the colour):

Inspecting the Regional District polygons offered by OpenStreetMap (note: “Powell River Regional District” was renamed to “qathet Regional District” in 2018. Project-GC still appears to use the former name), it starts to become obvious what has happened:

I believe that this occurs because there are indigenous/First Nations land enclaves within these Regional Districts. Due to this, the system has chosen (either intentionally or possibly due to a bug) to geocode caches located within these enclaves to “Greater Vancouver”, despite the fact that these enclaves are independent from county administration.

Using OpenStreetMap’s “query features” functionality within one of these enclaves does correctly confirm that this is indigenous land, not part of any county:

Compare this to a query within the Regional District:

I see three possible scenarios here:

Project-GC has intentionally chosen to place these enclaves with Greater Vancouver, for reasons that are not published (or that I cannot find.)

Assuming that Project-GC is sourcing its county data from OpenStreetMap, it may be a logic error in the geocoding machinery.

However, this question from 2017 (which is still relevant) suggests that Canada's county data is sourced from Statistics Canada, in which case this may be an issue with the polygons provided by Statistics Canada.

For now, I have placed this question under "Support and help", assuming (1).

In the case of (2) or (3), there are two possible ideas that come to mind.

Group these enclaves with the enclosing Regional District.

Create a new "county" for British Columbia called "Aboriginal Lands" which includes all of these enclaves. (That said, Geocaching is generally not permitted in indigenous lands so the first option is likely better.)

Geocaching.com counties not matching Project GC

On geocaching.com I have a county that shows that I found a cache in it. On Project GC that county shows as not having found a cache there. How do I correct this problem in Project GC? I am just starting to use Project GC so please give specific instructions on how to fix the problem.

Updated: On my Geocaching.com profile it shows I have found a cache in Lawrence county, South Dakota. On Project GC that county does not show that I have found a cache in that county. What do I need to do so that on Project GC it also shows I have found a cache in Lawrence county, South Dakota?

my Geocaching.com name is mcmm1 if you want to look at my profile and South Dakota.

Go to Project GC then Statistics: Profile Stats; Profile name (mcmm1); Maps tab; Scroll down and choose South Dakota. Lawrence County does not show I have a cache in that county but I do have that county on my Geocaching.com profile. How do I correct that in Project GC?

Map Counties map does not display for entire USA on Mac/Linux

When trying to display the county map for the entire USA the map never shows up even after waiting over 10 minutes.
The county map for individual states works fine.

Similarly, map compare works fine when comparing one county, but hangs the browser when more than 2 are selected.

The behavior occurs on Chrome, Firefox and Safari on Linux and MacOSX.
However, the USA county map displays correctly with Chrome on Android and Windows 10.

Advice?

Enhancement request: Countries with no regions/counties

Something for discussion with the PGC community.

There are many countries that have no regions - small islands, for example. There are many regions that have no counties, probably also small islands - its a geopolitical thing - there is no need to divide the land any smaller for administrative purposes. And there are some countries with a bit of a mix. New Zealand for example, consists of 3 regions, one of which has no counties (although I find it hard to consider the Chatham Islands as a "region").

But when it comes to challenge checkers, its a different matter. There are checkers that ask for a number of counties or regions and for some countries this results in no data, or in the above case of New Zealand, slightly confusing some people. Vatican City at least has one state, but has no counties. Monaco I suspect has no regions, but one has been provided (called "Monaco") in order to populate its counties.

So I have a proposal. Could countries that have no regions have one region auto-generated with the name of the country. After that, could regions with no counties get a county auto-generated using the name of the region. So a country with no regions would now have a region and a county, both named after the country. This, of course, would apply not just to geocheckers, but to everywhere in PGC.

I realise this may be difficult from a mapping bounds point of view, I am just hoping that if this proposal gains some support that PGC finds a way around this. (Copy the map data? Create some sort of arbitrary link that points to the parent data set?).

Then there is also the odd case of Antarctica which appears to be a region without a country, yet is treated as a country pretty much everywhere PGC.

And before you start upvoting or downvoting this - I appreciate this is not a problem in your country. Try to image what it would take for a checker to be consistant across the world.

I also realise that implementing this might cause questions down the line - "Nauru does not have any counties!!" But I suspect these will be few and far between as people will see them as default space fillers.

2020 Swiss county mergers

Hi

When I look for caches by county in Switzerland (either in "map counties" or with "map compare") I still see a number of counties which no longer exist since the merger on 01.01.2020. E.g:
- Villaz-Saint-Pierre and La Folliaz merged to the new municipality of Villaz
- Coreserey, Noréaz, Prez-vers-Noréaz merged to the new municipality of Prez

The official Swiss maps have been updated::
https://www.atlas.bfs.admin.ch/maps/13/de/15078_229_228_227/23829.html

If I understand correctly, OSM has also updated their maps:
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Switzerland/2020_Municipality_Mergers

When will the information be updated in the PGC maps?

Thank you for your help.

enhancement request: identify counties

When I go caching overseas I know I am going to be at a given area (eg at the airport for a few hours between flights) so I want to add some of the caches there into my vGPS. However if I query the whole state there are more than 10,000 caches so not all are returned. I would like to query just the county, but I cannot easily find what county that is (especially if it is a country that does not use the term "county", so now I do not even know what to search google for!)

Could we have a way to resolve caches to counties, perhaps in the cache popup that occurs when selecting them in Live Map or Map Compare, or perhaps add a county name outline layer to the maps that can be toggled on and off.

Missing region / county map not honouring filters

I am not sure this is a bug, but I also don't think I am doing this wrong:

I use the "Map - Region" or "Map - County" to find those we did not have find in yet or to see how many finds in each subdivision.

Seems to work.

I can add a filter "Type: only multi checked" and then have to set "Size: all 7 checked", which is easy to do.

The result however does not change. I would have expected to now only see Multichaches (and a lot more red and smaller numbers). The map and number breakdown does not change though.

Any idea?

I'm having trouble displaying County Maps for Canada

I’m having trouble displaying the county maps. I’ve tried it using IE and chrome, and different computers, and even asked friends to try. All scenarios show the same results.

When I go to Tools / Map Counties and enter my profile name & Country/Region = Canada/Quebec and press filter, I get no map, but if I scroll down I do see the list of counties and the # of caches I’ve found in each (16 of 98). The same thing happens for other non-Ontario provinces.

If I enter Country/Region = Canada/Ontario and press filter, I do get a map, but it is zoomed in and only shows the Waterloo county. No other counties are shown. Zooming in and out changes nothing. If I scroll down I do see the list of counties and the # of caches I’ve found in each (43 of 49). I get this same useless map if I leave region blank, and just enter Country=Canada.

If I enter Country/Region = United States/Michigan and press filter, it all looks fine. I get a map showing all Michigan counties. The ones where I have found caches are in green and the others are red. Scrolling down I see the list of counties and the # of caches I’ve found in each (16 of 83). It works fine for USA.

Other USA states are working; other Canadian provinces are not.

This is very annoying.

This looks like a bug.

Please help.
