Extremes-by-area Feature request - Use historical data

I find the "Extremes-by-area" statistic very interesting. It's comparable to the GeoTrophy. Unfortunately, it doesn't take historical data into account.

In PGC, I only found the oldest, highest, most found, and most favorite in Denmark. However, I also found the northernmost, westernmost, and southernmost—at least as they were at that time. It would be good to include these as well, since the statistics otherwise constantly change.

First of all, I know that some of the topics have already been covered in other topics, but I think that since I'm going to talk about several topics, I'll just mention them in one topic.

First of all, I congratulate you on this project as it creates yet another set of objectives to achieve. I know that the project is in its early stages, so new resources will appear, including those that I will mention below, but it doesn't hurt to suggest them.

I will suggest and number the topics that could improve the area extremes system:
1- As it already exists with the extremes found where clicking on the icon and the cache appears, there could be in those that we have not found, thus making the search easier (it could be the same as those we found or even a special search, as this way it could be easier to find even the areas that we do not have in any of the extremes found).

2- As it happens to some geocachers, even I am currently the owner of some cache in Extremos and for that reason the icon is like I need to find it, but as it is not possible to find the caches themselves, I think they could refer to this with an icon in another color, for example.

3- As there is already the highest altitude extreme, why the lowest altitude extreme?

4- There could be a filter that allows us to include caches that are archived or not, for example the filters that exist in the D\T graph of type\size

Extremes by area enhancement request: Show extreme when hovering also for those you do not qualify

Today the Extremes for areas, which you have logged, do show up when you hoover the symbol in profile statistics.

But I think it would be good if you would see the extreme geocache for an area/type when you hover also for those that you do not qualify. That would mean that it would simplify finding these extremes in a future trip.

I assume the information is available as it is checked if you do qualify, so it is probably easy to add.

Treasure icon collection similar to souvenirs

Hi, my specific issue was discussed back in 2023 at Map of Challenge Checkers hanging in some cases when requesting all of United States - PGC freezes when asking for a maps of challenge caches from the entire U.S. The only way to get the entire U.S. is to do 51 separate state-by-state searches. A couple of us discussed possible solutions, including:

Activate the multi-state selection capability on the map page, to allow me to click on more than one state at a time. If I am traveling to one part of a country, I would like to be able to do one search covering multiple states (rather than 10 or 20 separate searches). If one can create multi-state maps, anyone can can keep all searches under the current server capacity limits.

While this capability is a critical need in the U.S., it would also be very valuable for any cacher traveling through their own country or to other countries. [For the US, a very inelegant and single-country stop-gap measure would be to create a somewhat arbitrary country of "United States (Western States)" and "United States (Eastern States)" to essentially divide the US into two pieces.]

Would love to get a sense of whether others would value the multi-state capability. Thanks, bejs

Add type filter to Hidden Month on profile stats

I have found the addition of type/size filters on the various tables on my profile stats to be super useful, but was wondering if it was possible (and/or desirable to more than just myself) that the hidden month table have the same option? Personally, size would be interesting but not super important, type I would find incredible useful though.

edit: Additionally, it would be incredibly useful if there was a way for the cache type filter on the map hidden month tool to then only use that type when calculating what month(s) are missing

Add countries to 'Challenges' tab on profile stats

Could you add a section which shows the first challenge found in each country visited on the 'Challenges' tab of the profile stats, similar to the one on the 'Events' tab? I always try to find a challenge cache in countries I visit (not always possible!) and would value having this info on my profile stats.

I have no idea if this is the right forum to post this so please feel free to move it to most appropriate one if necessary. I'm not sure if I would consider this a Feature Request but more like a suggestion or an ask for a minor change.

Currently The Achiever badge under PGC's BadgeGen counts the number of challenges you've logged. As per the current GC.com challenge rules, you must qualify for any challenges you publish but you can't log any of your own (challenge) caches so wouldn't it be nice if you got "credit" for all the challenges you've published "under" The Achiever badge as well?

Would that be possible or worth considering? It would be a nice to have, IMO. :-)

Enhancement request - Virtual GPS - show superunit(s) in group header

I very often group the VGPS list by country, region or county. The group headers will contain the grouping element, all groups are sorted alphabetically by this element.

Example: the list contains caches from several countries and is grouped by county.

The groups of the different counties are sorted alphabetically across the individual countries and are not grouped together in supergroups (which would be the optimal improvement :-)

Since the latter is certainly not so easy to realize, my wish would be to place the names of the region and the country to which the respective county belongs in the group header after the name of the county. When grouping by region, this only applies to the name of the country.

This would allow you to quickly recognize which countries and regions many unknown counties belong to.

Add more granular boundary regions in the Singapore map

Currently the Singapore map only supports very coarse grained regions. There are only five regions. It looks like this: https://i.imgur.com/HXxUG4K.png

Singapore can be further subdivided into what the government calls Planning Areas, though colloquially it's more commonly referred to as districts or neighbourhoods.

I've built a small tool to visualize my cache finds on a map subdivided by these Planning Areas. It looks like this: https://i.imgur.com/6DFHc1m.png

While it's already useful for me, it'd be nice if a map like this was readily available to other Singaporeans using project-gc. Ideally we'd be able to toggle between subdivisions by region, and by planning areas. Similar to how the US map can be toggled between subdivisions by state and counties.

Finally, if this suggestion is implemented, might I suggest that the map be named "Districts" instead of "Planning Areas"? While the latter is the formal term used by our government, the former is how the locals typically refer to these subdivisions.

Suggestion for improvement: Add a button to copy the "Example log" generated by the checker

This small improvement might encourage geocachers to use this button to copy the "Example log" contents and paste it into their log as proof of qualification.

Also, currently, we can't see the whole "Example log" contents because the TextArea is too small. We need to manually enlarge the TextArea, then "Select all" and "Copy" to copy the "Example log" contents.

Perhaps this TextArea should automatically enlarge according to its contents as is the case for the "Script output" TextArea.

Feature Request: Use corrected coordinates for Highest and Lowest Elevations stats section

Currently, the profile stats show the elevation of posted coordinates. This means that for most cachers, the lowest elevation list consists of mystery caches that have the posted coordinates in the sea. Making that part of statistics pretty much random.

E.g. On my profile, 9/10 caches in there show up as below sea level, although they are all actually above it.

Because PGC has the access to read corrected coordinates, I thought that maybe it's possible to implement that part of the stats to show them instead.

P.S. Alternatively, if for some reason this is not possible, could we get the option of manually excluding caches from only that part of stats, using a bookmark list?

P.P.S. Some people have raised the argument "But then I can just correct some cache coordinates to the middle of the ocean and get the deepest badge!"
This argument does not seem valid to me - bogus correcting like that would be no different than couch logging a random cache to claim some other badge - you are only cheating yourself this way, and it is not possible to enforce stopping it.
At the moment this stat is a bogus one for 90% of cachers anyway. By using corrected coordinates, it would become bogus for the 0.01% of cheaters, yes, but it would be correct for others. (Sorry for the rant)

Could we please have a filter, especially for Map Compare, to filter by altitude. I appreciate that it will not be precise due to the way altitudes are calculated, but as most requirements are for challenge caches which use the same altitudes, this will not matter.

Perhaps something like two text entry boxes for low limit and high limit, using the units as set in the user's settings. Blank = default, no low filter and no high filter, which matches the same results as not having the filter enabled.

As challenges can verify altitude, the data must be available!

Feature request: DNF filter for solved mysteries

I have a number of Custom Filters, and most feature the statement that there must be at most 2 DNFs in the last 3 logs, especially those filters that handling archived caches - I very much enjoy hunting for archived caches :-)

But I find I cannot do this for solved mysteries. Custom Filters do not have an option to select for Has solved coordinates, and Solved Mysteries does not have a filter for strings of DNFs.

Could we please have Solved Mysteries either include an option to add Custom Filters, or include an option to include a DNF filter. Incidentally my filter is no more than two DNFs in the last three logs.

In the meantime I am importing the results to vGPS, sorting by logs and individually selecting and removing those with too many DNFs. A bit cludgy but it works.

Feature Request - Add a "Cancel" Button for "Discover Trackables"

I really like the "Discover trackables" feature. Upon occasion, I've written up my "Log text" and typed in a ton of "Tracking numbers" and quickly hit that Discover button too soon before realizing, oh man...I didn't set the right date. Ugh! And then, I just watch it sit in the queue. It's just sitting there...waiting, and waiting. I'm yelling at my screen to cancel but it doesn't pay any attention to me?!? I just wish there were a Cancel button so I could correct and re-Discover. Thanks for considering!! =)

I recently completed a challenge where I needed a mystery find on 275 of 366 calendar dates. The needed found dates tool was invaluable for this. I'm trying to continue this theme and pick up cache types on days that I haven't found them. Right now this means I have a folder of bookmarked needed found date pages, one for each of the non-event types, that I have to open separately to see if I need a certain type for today. It would be awesome if I could just click on a date and see all the cache types I do or don't have for that date in one place. I apologize if this already exists and I just missed it.

Improvements to the script tag list

I posted this request (with far less context) in the Miscellaneous section of the Challenge Checkers Forum a while ago, but got no response. I will try again here.

Feature Request

The current page that displays a checker's tags is... unwieldy. It is simply one giant list of tags that all load in at once. For scripts with many (> 1000) tags, this can make a number of checker-related operations slow. I would like to propose the following changes:

(1) Paging of tags. It would be nice if the tags were split across multiple "pages" (say, 100 tags per page.) This way, not all tags are loaded in at once. This reduces the strain on both the tagger's computer as well as the PGC servers.

Example - note that the paging buttons:

(2) Searching of tags. It would be lovely to see a search mechanism for tags on a particular script. Use-cases:

- A user wants a tag edited, so they email me. The only way for me to locate the tag is via Control-F. This is... annoying; it would be nice to see some kind of built-in search.

- A user asks for a "test checker" or a "statistic generator checker" to be edited, so they email me. Now, there is no "good" way to locate this particular tag without (1) opening the checker page, (2) reading the tag comment, (3) Control-F for the tag comment.

Example - note the search filter "tagger:" which I would use to filter down to only my tags:

(3) Editing of tags from the "My scripts and tags" page. This is similar to (2). When I am on the "My scripts and tags" page, I see a big list of tags. Each one has an "Edit tag" button. However, when I click this, it opens the script page at puts me at the top of the big list of tags.

So if I want to edit a particular checker, I must first locate it in the "My scripts and tags" page, and then click the "Edit tag" button, and then locate it a second time amongst all the other tags on that script. What would be nice to see is "Edit tag" taking me directly to the edit menu, like this:

Clicking "Edit" beside tag opens the editor immediately...

Feature request: Generate field notes from log compare

I love the new Log Compare tool. I used to have a Garmin GPS, but somehow the built-in memory broke at some point, corrupting the geocache_visits.txt file. I did not have a backup.

What I had, though, is that I found a lot of the caches in that period with another geocacher. The new Log Compare tool lets me find out which.

My feature request is this: Please make the log compare tool able to generate field notes files from the result. That would make it easier to log them with the correct dates.

How do I request that an existing Challenge Checker be updated?

Challenge checkers were developed for Charter Member caches several years ago (2014?) and updated perhaps 5 years later. Per this forum topic:

The number of Charter Members has been updated and there are now only 328 who have retained status as a Charter Member and have ever owned a cache.

I was looking to have the Challenge Checker for GC55PYV and GC55AHK (among others of this type) updated to the current list. I can provide a listing of names or ID #'s as needed to facilitate the process.

Also, since this will continue to be a diminishing group, is there a way to modify the output script for those who don't qualify so that they can see who they have completed caches by so as to facilitate getting caches from those that they are missing?

Since p-gc's challenge checker technology is the authoritative source for geocaching.com hosted Challenge-Caches, it would be of great help if p-gc provided a REST API through which a checker could be programmatically executed and the results returned back for instance like this:

On the challenge map, you can filter by different options, like not available, archived, premium, requirements met / not met. But it would be nice to have an extra filter, to exclude the challenges you already have found and/or the ones you have visited (by write note log). It will make the map more readable.

Could I please have some additional columns added to the vGPS table giving the find dates for the various people involved in the query. Normally that would be just me, but in Map Compare other pers may get added as well.

New AddOn for Country Badges: Different cache types

It would be great to have additional filters on the "What's hot?" tool page. Most useful would be the "Hide Found / Owned / Not found" filter, but the standard set from the "Top Favourite Caches" would be best.

Enhancement request: Countries with no regions/counties

Something for discussion with the PGC community.

There are many countries that have no regions - small islands, for example. There are many regions that have no counties, probably also small islands - its a geopolitical thing - there is no need to divide the land any smaller for administrative purposes. And there are some countries with a bit of a mix. New Zealand for example, consists of 3 regions, one of which has no counties (although I find it hard to consider the Chatham Islands as a "region").

But when it comes to challenge checkers, its a different matter. There are checkers that ask for a number of counties or regions and for some countries this results in no data, or in the above case of New Zealand, slightly confusing some people. Vatican City at least has one state, but has no counties. Monaco I suspect has no regions, but one has been provided (called "Monaco") in order to populate its counties.

So I have a proposal. Could countries that have no regions have one region auto-generated with the name of the country. After that, could regions with no counties get a county auto-generated using the name of the region. So a country with no regions would now have a region and a county, both named after the country. This, of course, would apply not just to geocheckers, but to everywhere in PGC.

I realise this may be difficult from a mapping bounds point of view, I am just hoping that if this proposal gains some support that PGC finds a way around this. (Copy the map data? Create some sort of arbitrary link that points to the parent data set?).

Then there is also the odd case of Antarctica which appears to be a region without a country, yet is treated as a country pretty much everywhere PGC.

And before you start upvoting or downvoting this - I appreciate this is not a problem in your country. Try to image what it would take for a checker to be consistant across the world.

I also realise that implementing this might cause questions down the line - "Nauru does not have any counties!!" But I suspect these will be few and far between as people will see them as default space fillers.

An option to not heatmap on the maps tab?

I seem to be in the minority on this opinion but I can't stand the heat map on every map in the maps tab. The color isn't great but I can deal with that, mostly I just want to see a consistent color for the areas I've been to. I already know that I've found less caches in places I've only traveled through, I don't need a shading system to tell me that. Checking the maps after a trip used to be my favorite part of Project-GC but now I barely like it.

I looked around to see if I could turn it off but I don't think there's a way. It could be as simple as a checkbox in the settings, although I'm not a programmer so I don't know for sure how hard it would be to actually write out such a thing. I don't have a paid membership here as of now but I'd 100% pay up if it meant my maps were solid color again.

Add Turkey to the European map

Since you have included Egypt in both the African and Asian maps, Cyprus and Russia in both the Asian and European map. Is it possible to also add Turkey to both the Asian and European map since part of that country is also in Europe?

Feature request: Add Min and Max distance to the 'Center & Radius' filter.

The ability to filter for caches that are at least xx distance away but closer than yy distance away from a center point would be a very useful addition to the already amazing "center and radius" filter.

1. This would help us be able to find caches that meet a "Well traveled cacher" type challenge cache where X number of caches must be found in each 5 mile band from your home point. i.e. 1 cache each 5 mi band to 250 mi: ex: 0-5 mi; 5-10 mi; 10-15 mi... 245-250 mi.

2. This would help when planning a trip. Often when planning a road trip with friends (maybe to some Mega event) we will make a list of caches to get along the way in a virtual gps shared list here in Project gc, but we want to ignore all caches close to home as we could easily get them on a non "road trip" day.

In both cases adding the filter should help avoid hitting the "10,000 cache limit" on the "Map Compare" tool typically used to plan a trip by removing caches that you want to ignore anyway that are close to home providing a much better experience.

Feature request: Attributes as filter in New cache notifiers

I think an option to set up New cache notifiers with attributes as filters would be a nice addition. If it is possible to add of course.

Some examples of the uses I can see for this would be:

Setting up notifiers for your local area with caches with the "field puzzle" attribute as instant notifiers and having a "all mystery caches" as a daily digest.

Setting up a daily digest for challenge caches for a region or country even if you don't want notifications about every mystery cache for the same area.

Daily digest of all caches in a country/region with for example the attribute "abandoned structure" (or maybe "scuba gear required", "abandoned mine", "climbing gear required" or whatever your preferred type of adventure is) to see if anything interesting pops up for your next road trip.

And so on, I'm sure there are many ways to use this. :)

Maybe a "not allowed" option would also be useful? Here I'm mainly thinking about solving the problem where I know some people become frustrated with power trails maxing out the 30 day limit of their notifications, so I'm thinking a user in a powertrail rich area could add a "not allowed" to the power trail attribute for all their notifications and would get their normal notifications for all caches that does not have the power trail attribute and no notifications for caches with the power trail attribute. But it could of course also be used for things like "T5 caches without the attribute boat required" and other things.

Map filter: corrected coordinates

Apologies if this has been asked before, but it would be very helpful if there was an option on the map to see the corrected coordinates for puzzles & multis even after they're logged. It's annoying that the icon reverts back to the unrelated location after logging a find.

Seems like if you have done the work to solve a puzzle and find a cache, you've "earned the right" to see where it is on the map moving forward instead of having to hunt & peck at the map in a 2 mile radius? This would be helpful for seeing which areas may be open for new caches, too.

I understand not everyone would want this (might mess up geoart, etc), so having it as a toggle option (show corrected/show original) seems useful. Thanks for considering this!

Cache Type by Area Stat

It would be nice to be able to see how many of each cache type there is in an area. This could be represented as a histogram. Instead of the Caches per Area being broken down by the different sub areas, the histogram would show cache types.

Traditionals,

Mystery

Multi

Virtual

The information is currently available if someone does the work and makes several filtered caches per area requests. It seems nice to know what percentage of the caches are Traditionals versus Unknown. Also it would be nice to be able to compare regions. Does Germany have a different distribution of caches than Michigan?

Finds per Area also seems a candidate for this extension.

Most counties in a day list

On the Finds page there are 3 "Most... in a day" regarding location:

Most countries in a day
Most states in a day
Most counties in a day

However, there is no "Top ... in a day" List under Find Stats. Just wondering if this list can be obtained somewhere?

Filter Map by Most-Watched

Currently, we can filter the geocaching map based on hidden date, month, favorite points, etc. I would love the ability to filter the map based on most-watched geocaches in the same way. Caches with a high watch-count tend to be difficult / challenging in some way, or otherwise very interesting, and I think it would be just as useful to see this kind of filter along with the favorite point filter to seek out interesting and challenging geocaches.

Thoughts?

Can the souvenirs be sorted by date?

I like the souvenir grouping in the profile stats, but sometimes it would be nice to be able to switch the sorting to date-based (newest to be shown at the top)

Wouldn't it make sense to add a link to the wiki in the dialog you get by clicking the "Support" button?

Overview map for Lap-Caches?

Is it technically possible to add an overview map for Lab-Caches in ProjectGC? In the statistics the Lab-Cache-Finds of a user are also displayed.
I do not mean the physical locations of the lab caches, only the "Geocache Adventures" flags, as shown in the screenshot.
It would be a great thing, because you can plan your tour better.
And you rarely look at the app when you search for "real" Caches
