"Log length, words" longest and shortest seem to be based on characters instead of words

I had had a log of 230 words showing as my longest for a couple of weeks, but the last few days this has changed to a new log of 226 words. I checked and the 226 word log has a greater number of total characters than the 230 word log. Given the statistic is labelled as being based on words I feel it should be showing the 230 word log still (and using the character count as a tiebreaker if there are multiple logs with the same number of words).

I noticed that in http://project-gc.com/qa/?qa=10434/the-minimum-log-length-statistics-is-very-wrong-why there was a comment by tadaima about the shortest being listed as 14 when they had several 10-13 word logs as well. This seems to be also due to the character count rather than word count.

I know, that the average log lenght can be seen in the profile stats.

But i would like to have this as a part of the statistic section (like "Top finders, Top FTF etc...) of PGC, if possible.

What are the revised rules for word length definition? Are they consistent with the ones used by Kyle's BadgeGen?

Yes, the word count definition might vary depending on exactly how a "word" is defined. Done a little testing using the following 6 tools:
* Microsoft Word
* wordcounter.net
* wordcountertool.com
* wordcounttool.com
* wordcounttools.com
* Microsoft Excel

The count results from these tools on the examples are, respectively:
    X X X X X X X => 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7 => (no variation)
    -------------- => 1, 0, 1, 1, 0, 1 => (0 or 1)
    fri3nd => 1, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1 => (1 or 2)
    1.0 => 1, 2, 1, 0, 1, 1 => (0, 1 or 2)
    100 => 1, 1, 1, 0, 1, 1 => (0 or 1)
    5/5 => 1, 2, 1, 0, 2, 1 => (0, 1, or 2)
    foo-bar => 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1 => (no variation)
    friend(name) => 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 1 => (1 or 2)
    måste => 1, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1 => (1, 2)

Total counts for the 9 examples together => 15, 16, 15, 15, 16, 15 => (15 or 16)

Could you advise how Project-GC has counted the above using the previous algorithm and the new algorithm? It will be useful to understand the rules used.

At the end of the day, it probably doesn't matter a great deal as long as it is consistently applied. However, it is useful for the Project-GC algorithm to be compatible with that used for Kyle's BadgeGen. Do you know how the old and new algorithms compare with BadgeGen's?

Have noticed the "Log Length, words: Total words" numbers have gone down in the last few days, despite the numbers of logs have gone up. What is happening here?

In our South Austrlalia facebook group we once again had a discussion about bad logs eg just writing TFTC.

Many commented that generally 'the better the cache, the better/longer the log will be'.

There are many metrics about cache quality (FP, FP%, Wilson). A new measure could be 'Average log length'. It would be great to see a new stat displaying this. Also by graphing the average length by CO, you can determine who's caches are generally best appreciated.

This stat is already available by cache name in the profile stats ('Hides' tab under "Log Length, words:" ) so it may be relatively easy to create a graph for this metric.
