An '''Antipode cache''' is a specific kind of mystery that's plotted on one side of the earth, and has the final on the opposite side. These Geocaches are by default excluded from all Geographical statistics in the [[Profile Stats]] for example.

When Project-GC refers to '''Antipode caches''' it generally refers to both the above, and other geocaches with similar issues. Another example is traveling Geocaches, which actually should not exist anymore, but they have existed. These geocaches generally do not follow the guidelines and the effect is that they cause statistical oddities.

Geocaching HQ maintains a [[bookmark list]] containing all these Geocaches<ref>[https://coord.info/BMAFMJR Caches Excluded from Souvenirs and Statistics] at Geocaching.com</ref>, and Project-GC just follows their list where applicable.

Many [[Category:Tools|tools]] and [[top list]]s on [[Project-GC]] can have different filters applied to get different information. On some of them only a subsection of the filters can be used and some tools or top lists have filters that are only available for that specific tool or list.

==Profile name==
This filter highlights the user in a [[top list]], clicking the button with a blue silhouette and a pencil will fill the box with the user name of the [[authenticate]]d user. For the [[:Category:Tools|tools]] that can be used to compare something between two or more users, this filter has an extra box labelled ''Compare with'' for inputting other users who are to be compared. Users with a [[paid membership]] can use the button with a table on it to turn on ''multi compare''.

The '''Maps tab''' is a tab in a users [[Profile Stats]] that shows where they have found caches. At the top there is a World map that shows how many of the 250 countries the user have found caches in, under the world map all the found countries are listed with the number of caches found in each country.

Next is a map of the country where the user have found the most caches followed by maps for the [[continent]]s where the user have found caches and after that a map for each country that the user have found a cache in. This tab will be very long if the user have logged many countrys.

The maps of individual countries have toggle buttons for regions and counties, there is also buttons for each individual region that the user have found caches in, clicking the button with the regionname produces a map of the region with the found counties marked.

== Colors ==
Every area where the geocacher has found at least one geocache gets colored to show that they have geocached there. There are five levels of colors, the darker the color, the more finds in the area. The color levels are based on two requirements, whichever is lowest (easiest) is used.

The dynamic requirement is based on how many percent of the currently active geocaches the geocacher has found. More than 100% is possible if some of the finds are now archived. Using fixed numbers only has been tried, but for almost every single geocacher it means a darker color in 1-2 zones and then light colors in all others. Also there is a big difference between finding 1,000 geocaches in Germany/Nordrhein-Westfalen vs Germany/Hamburg, which makes it hard to originate from fixed numbers.

== Image sizes ==
The default size of the map images are made to fit Profile stats by using a size of max 734 pixels in width or 512 pixels in height. When clicking a map it opens up in a larger version. By copy/pasting the link a user can adjust the image size to use by adjusting the scale parameter (by adding &scale=VALUE to the url). Available values are: 1 (default), 2, 4, 8, 16.

== Map sources ==
All maps are generated based on data from [[OpenStreetMap]] with the one exception, Canada, which has a mix of sources. The polygon data is imported via [https://osm-boundaries.com OSM-Boundaries.com]. If you find issues with the borders the data can be corrected in [[OpenStreetMap]], Project-GC will then update its polygons with the next update.

== Addons ==
When achieving the status of a [[Gembadge]] you have unlocked the possibility of ''Addons''. Several ''Badges'' can have mini-badges added to them, these are called ''Addons''. For example, ''[[The Traditional Cacher]]'' will get a nice 366-addon added to it if you have logged a Geocache of the type Traditional on every date of the calendar.

The original idea with Addons was that they were supposed to be something you could work on after you had your Diamond. It was a concept aiming to please those who has been geocaching a lot, for a long time. The design was even to require a Diamond to show them. When we started detailing it out more and more we figured that some Addons will be fairly easy and others more or less impossible. The original idea was definitely aiming more for impossible than easy though. It's not meant that everyone should get every Addon, and even more so, not within a year or two.

The following placeholder ''Badges'' shows the available ''Addons''. Since some of them share locations, we can not show them all on single ''Badge''. No ''Badge'' can have all these ''Addons'' and the combinations shown below aren't possible.

== History ==
BadgeGen was originally created and maintained by [[Kyle Mills]], as a macro for GSAK. In [[Project-GC|Project-GC's]] early days we had the license to make a similar implementation of it embedded in [[Project-GC]]. In year 2020, the ownership of BadgeGen was transferred to the owner of Project-GC. This was done since [[Kyle Mills|Kyle]] himself wasn't geocaching anymore, and both parts wished for the name of BadgeGen to live on. Alongside with the acquiring of the BadgeGen license the product went through a big overhaul, adding new badges, rebalancing, new features and a new badge design. The new design was created by Markus (clappy).

[[Kyle Mills]] maintained BadgeGen up until, and including, version 3.x. The new version owned by [[Project-GC]] became ''version 4'', plain and simple.

== Addons ==
When achieving the status of a [[Gembadge]] you have unlocked the possibility of ''Addons''. Several ''Badges'' can have mini-badges added to them, these are called ''Addons''. For example, ''[[The Traditional Cacher]]'' will get a nice 366-addon added to it if you have logged a Geocache of the type Traditional on every date of the calendar.

The original idea with Addons was that they were supposed to be something you could work on after you had your Diamond. It was a concept aiming to please those who has been geocaching a lot, for a long time. The design was even to require a Diamond to show them. When we started detailing it out more and more we figured that some Addons will be fairly easy and others more or less impossible. The original idea was definitely aiming more for impossible than easy though. It's not meant that everyone should get every Addon, and even more so, not within a year or two.

The following placeholder ''Badges'' shows the available ''Addons''. Since some of them share locations, we can not show them all on single ''Badge''. No ''Badge'' can have all these ''Addons'' and the combinations shown below aren't possible.

== History ==
BadgeGen was originally created and maintained by [[Kyle Mills]], as a macro for GSAK. In [[Project-GC|Project-GC's]] early days we had the license to make a similar implementation of it embedded in [[Project-GC]]. In year 2020, the ownership of BadgeGen was transferred to the owner of Project-GC. This was done since [[Kyle Mills|Kyle]] himself wasn't geocaching anymore, and both parts wished for the name of BadgeGen to live on. Alongside with the acquiring of the BadgeGen license the product went through a big overhaul, adding new badges, rebalancing, new features and a new badge design. The new design was created by Markus (clappy).

[[Kyle Mills]] maintained BadgeGen up until, and including, version 3.x. The new version owned by [[Project-GC]] became ''version 4'', plain and simple.

== What is it ==
The Auto-challenge-checkers is one of the many [[paid membership]] features at Project-GC. If you are a paid member, Project-GC automatically runs [[Challenge checkers]] for you in the background so that when you view the Challenges you will know beforehand if you fulfill them or not. This will for example be shown on the maps where the cache icon will get a challenge status indicator in the lower left corner. The checker image in the cache descriptions can also show the status. The status shown is a cached result, not a real-time result.

== Background processing ==
Since there are tens of thousands of [[Challenge checkers]] and also thousands of paying members we can't run them all for every account on an hourly basis, or even daily. Some [[Challenge checkers]] require about a second to run, while others require 30 seconds. Due to this we have an algorithm that prioritizes what we expect to be most relevant.

Basically there are ten processes running 24/7, only storing results from the [[Challenge checkers]]. The process is the following:
* Go through all paying members and order them by the date when they were last processed.
* Find the 500 most relevant [[Challenge checkers]] for each user. These 500 are chosen by going through a few steps. As soon as 500 is reached, the rest of the steps are skipped.
# Challenges with a note from the user, that haven't been run for a week.
# Challenges not logged by the user, not tested the last month, and within 500 km from home.
# Challenges that haven't been tested the last two months, within 500 km from home.
# Challenges not logged by the user and not tested the last two months, in the same country as the user. If country is United States, also requires the home state.
# Challenges not tested the last three months, in the same country as the user. If country is United States, also requires the home state.
# Challenges not logged by the user and not tested in three months, within 1000 km from home.
# Challenges not tested within four months and within 1000 km from home.
# Challenges not logged by the user, not tested in four months, from the whole world, in a random order.
# Challenges not tested for six months, from the whole world, in random order.
* Run those (up to) 500 challenge checkers.
* Start over, with the next user in the queue.
Steps depending on home coordinates are skipped if they are not known to [[Project-GC]].
Step 1-7 are ordered by distance from home, closest to home is run first.

== Exceptions ==
Some Challenge checkers are never run automatically. Basically there are two variants:
# Some of the Challenge checkers at Project-GC are written in alternative ways and are not supported by the Auto-challenge-checkers. It's challenge checkers written by employees at Project-GC and they aren't compatible.
# Challenge checkers that often require more than 30 seconds to run are excluded from the automation. This to leave room for multiple others to be run instead.

== Hardware used ==
As mentioned there are ten processes handling this. They are run in a Virtual machine with 12 hardware threads and RAM enough to handle the maximum amount of memory allowed for each process. Depending on the challenge, and its [[Checker script|script]], the database cluster could be the bottleneck, or the LUA scripts. The LUA scripts are created by the community, and while some are very optimized, others are less so. The database cluster is shared with other services doing data harvesting. It consists of 8 servers, with 16 hardware threads each, and more memory than they need.

== Future ==
We plan to provide a front-end configuration tool where the users can move the focus. For example, if a user plans to travel to another country, they might want to ask the system to run the Challenge checkers in that country instead. The current idea is to allow up to five circles of various radiuses on a map, which the users can move themselves.

Such page would probably also include some analyzing numbers, like which Challenge checkers were last run, when they were run, how many have been run and such.

[[Project-GC]]'s statistics are based on data from [[Geocaching.com]]. The data is fetched via the [[Geocaching LIVE api]]. [[Project-GC]] uses a combination of the official API available to general [[Geocaching Partners]] and a private ''Enterprise API''.

The data is still owned by [[Geocaching HQ]] and [[Project-GC]] pays royalties to be allowed to fetch and use the data like it does.

Geocaching data is continuously being updated in [[Project-GC]]'s databases via the mentioned API. This is done using several parallel methods:

== Refreshing profiles ==
Geocaching profiles are continuously being updated based on a rule set in the background.

When refreshing Geocaching profiles all new and updated logs are fetched from the API, and also metadata around the Geocaching profile itself, like for example the name of the [[Geocacher]].

* [[Geocacher]]s that haven't been refreshed in 24 hours and are [[Paid membership|paying members]] are being refreshed.
* [[Geocacher]]s that haven't been refreshed in 2 days but used [[Project-GC]]'s website the last week are being refreshed.
* [[Geocacher]]s that haven't been refreshed in 7 days but used [[Project-GC]]'s website the last 3 months are being refreshed.

* ... and so on, there are ~10 rules like this in place.

Also whenever a user visits the website of [[Project-GC]]s the system checks when that user was last updated. If it's a paying member there will be yet another update if the data is more than 1 hour old. However, this is a job that gets queued in the background and it might take a few minutes until it kicks in.

A [[Geocache]] with new logs will also get scheduled to have its metadata (difficulty, terrain, size, country ...) updated.

It can be noted that a [[Geocacher]] who is a [[Paid membership|paying member]] is more likely to have up-to-date data at [[Project-GC]] when coming back to the site, while freemium users might notice that their data isn't as fresh.

== Refreshing geocache data ==
The refreshing of Geocaching profiles mentioned above makes sure that [[Project-GC]]'s users have frequently updated data, but some [[Geocache]]s might be left out because they have only been logged by [[Geocacher]]s not very active with [[Project-GC]]. Therefore [[Project-GC]] also refreshes [[Geocache]]s.

The frequency of when [[Geocache]]s are refreshed are based on a mix of several variables, like for example:
* Last found
* [[Hidden date]]
* Disabled/Archived state
* Number of logs

When a [[Geocache]] gets refreshed metadata about the [[Geocache]] gets updated in the database. Also all new/updated logs are updated in the system.

== Log data ==
The log entries fetched are the same, regardless if they are fetched from Geocaching profiles or from Geocache data. It's just different approaches/angles to retrieve the same information. If Geocaching profile X has found Geocache GCX, then GCX automatically also has a log from Geocaching profile X.

== Databases ==
Now most [[Geocache]] data and logs exists in the primary database cluster and are fairly up-to-date. Most of the data will only be hours old in the database, but a fair share is expected to be 24-36 hours old.

However [[Project-GC]] has more than one database cluster. Most statistics on the web are created based on data from another database cluster. The primary database cluster replicates its data every 4 hours o the second cluster, adding an additional ~4 hours of latency. As an example most top lists are based on this secondary cluster, while [[Profile stats]] are not.

As a technical note, the primary database cluster is a row-based relational database. The secondary cluster is created and meant for database harvesting and is a column-oriented DBMS.

== Statistics ==
As mentioned in [[Data synchronization#Databases|Databases]], most statistics are based on a secondary database cluster. Even if [[Project-GC]] itself has up-to-date profile data the secondary database cluster might still have the old data. This is due to the fact that a full replica of the data-set is copied every four hours.

Most top lists are using this secondary cluster. Basically everything that gets heavily computed (data harvesting) uses the secondary cluster, while more raw fetches use the primary one. [[Profile stats]] is an exception.

It's also worth mentioning here as well that [[Lab caches]] generally aren't included in statistics. They aren't technically compatible and it would be very complex to do this. Again, [[Profile stats]] can be an exception.

Finally, all generated statistics are [[Data caching|cached]]. The period for which it is cached varies but anything between 5 minutes and 1 hour is very common. So if two people ask for the same statistic, it will only be computed the first time, the second person will receive a cached version. This has the downside that it potentially also adds more latency and shows older data in some cases.

== Profile stats ==

== Special numbers ==
Some statistics are very special since they are based on pre-calculated values. This is usually because it would be extremely hard to calculate this in real-time, therefore it's based on pre-calculated values. [[Project-GC]] calculates the following data for every [[Geocacher]] in the background on a regular basis. Normally daily, but there are some exceptions to it (usually that some users gets calculated more often).

* streaks
* calendar loops

This does not affect [[Profile stats]]. If numbers like these are needed, [[Profile stats]] calculates them itself instead of using pre-calculated data. This is also needed since it may have [[Lab cache]] data merged.

The list shows the countries name and flags, how many found it logs have been posted from people that seem to be living in that country and the percentage of the total logs on the users caches. The top list shows the top 20 countries and under the list there is information about how many nationalities that did not make the top list. Sometimes there are founds from 'unknown nationalities', this is due to Project-GC calculating the nationality based on the users geocaching activity since this information is not available from Geocaching.com.

== Top finders of my caches ==
This is a ''top list'' of the accounts that have found the most of a users caches. The list shows the name of the finder, the amount of caches they have found and the percentage of the total caches owned by the user. The top list shows the top 20 finders and under it there is a box that shows the next 20 finders and how many caches they have found.

Below the grid is a summary of the number of the combinations, with a value and percentage of those with a difficulty or terrain rating of 3 or more. There is a link to the [[MapMatrix|D/T Matrix Tool]] to help the user find which caches they need to complete the next loop.

This button is marked with a slightly cropped version of the logo for the [[Virtual GPS]], it allows the user to add caches to the [[Virtual GPS]] or remove them from it.

The first option from this button allows the user to draw a polygon on the map, multiple polygons can be drawn on the same map and does not have to be connected to each other. Polygons drawn on the map can be manipulated by moving the 'corners'/vertex with the cursor. The second option is a cross mark and can be used to remove a polygon.

The option with the Virtual GPS-logo and the plus sign adds all caches inside a polygon to the active Virtual GPS, the option with the minus sign removes all caches inside a polygon from it.

This filter highlights the user in a [[top list]], clicking the button with a blue silhouette and a pencil will fill the box with the user name of the [[authenticate]]d user.
