They are caches without a physical container where you instead need to answer some kind of question related to the spot (rather like an earthcache). Virtual caches can't be found from home (or at least that's the idea; there used to be a few "armchair caches" that could be logged from home but I think most if not all of them are archived by now).

It depends how good your armchair skills are - there are still quite a lot which with the right internet resources and skills the answers can be double checked, it does defeat the point of them though and normally they are interesting/pretty locations worth going to.
There are a number of virtuals (and earthcaches) that can be armchair-logged still today, given some internet research. I was talking about virtuals that were *meant* to be armchair-logged (like http://coord.info/GCF55A, for instance).
