I'm wondering where the height of a cache is stored. I've always thought that that information is available with geocaching.com, but just not published on the cache page. But then the other day someone told me that geocaching.com doesn't have this data and the fact that we can look it up in Project-GC is only due to the fact that the latter is comparing the coordinates against surface height data.

The reason why I ask is for caches like this one: http://coord.info/GC5X63A . According to the owner, the cache is set at a height of -31,5 meters, but under the surface. I've suggested with the CO to check with geocaching.com if they can set the cache height accordingly. But I may have sent them to the wrong organisation?

Groundspeek has no elevation data for caches on there site, atleast that i know about. They dont use it in their stats.
It can be included with some scripts like the PGC script at https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/9713-geocaching-com-project-gc

The elevation is expand at the links below but an quick explanation is the elevation data is taken from radar measurements from earth orbit (space shuttle and satellits)
The elevation is always the grounds level so the cache will have the altitude of the ground above (I have no idea of if buildings heights get included)
And a qoute from the FAQ that might be relevant for this question
"We do not do manual changes in the data. But if you find an entry that seems to be off by a lot more than in other services, feel free to report it so that we can investigate."
