[Resolved] GC9EP34-Checker for NYS County Challenge Needed Please
August 04, 2021 11:17PM
Dear Project GC,
I am interested in getting a checker for my NYS County Challenge cache (GC9EP34). I am basically looking for the checker to register at least one find (of any type) in all 62 of New York's counties. Please let me know if there is any other info you would need to create this checker.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!
Best,
Chris

Hi,
Wow-thanks for doing that so quickly! I am confused though, as I completed all 62 in 2018. I have a screenshot from my MyGeocachingProfile.com but don't see a place here to attach it. I am happy to send it to you if needed. Can you tell which county it's saying I don't have?
Thanks again,
Chris

Hi Chris,
it is not a problem for me, but maybe for the reviewer.

You are missing "Kings County (NY)".

Maybe a cache was moved after 2018...

Hi Fuzzy2000,

Here is my find for Kings County, which has since been archived (GC7C6Z9):
Link:
https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC7C6Z9_the-best-view-in-new-york?guid=99040fd7-c530-401f-9267-064271e591d9

If my memory serves correctly, it crossed up the MyGeocachingProfile checker originally as well (not sure why). When I contacted them they were able to see it is indeed in Kings County and correct it. I found it on 5/4/18 and it was archived on 11/26/19.

For the checker, I am OK with people having finds that have since been archived after they found it.
Hope that helps,
Chris

hi chris,

i digged a bit deeper:

Here is the place your found cache (GC7C6Z9) is located:

And here is a picture of the County-Borders (used by Project-GC):
The arrow points to the location of the archived cache you have logged.

(right side is Kings County)

The Cache is outside the borders. This is the reason why the checker will not count this for KiCo. It counts to NY-county instead.

Hi,
Here is a link to my profile:

My completed map is about 1/3 of the way down on the page.
Hope that helps.
Thanks,
Chris

According to this map on geocaching.com the border is tight against the Kings County shore.

It seems you would need to find another cache.

There is something gone wrong with the picture. As sloth96 left home at the moment, i will repost:

Hi,
I have found some gov't and post office maps that show the boundary in the middle of the river. At this point I will just contact the reviewer and go from there.
Thanks again for making the checker.
Best,
Chris

Hi,
I posed this question to my reviewer (Sapience Trek - his profile is at: , and here is the response I received:

I did look at the county GIS maps, it does appear that your find is in the county you said it is. Seems the checker then is the thing broken. I don't know how the checkers get their county data. Best thing to do is post a question in the forums on project-gc for one of the people there to look into.

I'm not sure if there is a way to fix this or not.
Please advise if there is any other info I can provide for you.
Thanks,
Chris

The checkers use the OSM polygon data for the US counties

Hi,
I am confused at this point. A friend directed me to another Project-GC checker that is for the same purpose (one cache find in each NY county): https://project-gc.com/Challenges/GC14VR9/10082

According to this checker, it says I am also missing Madison County (which I am not) in addition to Kings County. According to the one provided for my cache, it says I am only missing Kings County (which according to the GIS.gov map says I am not). It seems odd to me that two checkers designed for the same purpose don't agree with each other.

Is there a way to fix this?
Thanks

I believe the county boundaries shown on geocaching.com are also from open street map.

There appears to be different mapping layers on the geocaching maps that show county lines. OpenStreetMap Default, OpenStreetMap German Style, OpenStreetMap Black and White, and ESRI NatGeoWorldMap all appear to have county lines available. (If your instance does not have them try changing the browser as Edge, Chrome, and Firefox all appear to have different layers available.) The map I am using is this one:
https://www.geocaching.com/map/#?ll=40.70067,-73.99794&z=15

The different maps appear to disagree as to where the boundary is. Some have it inland of the piers. Some have it at the edge of the pier. All seem to give the middle of the river the NY county.

This map https://www.geocaching.com/play/map?lat=40.7007&lng=-73.9979&zoom=15&asc=true&sort=distance&clean=true has different layers available and do not appear to show county boundaries.
