[Resolved] Seoul Challenge Checker
June 07, 2018 04:58AM
Hello, I'm not sure if this one is possible yet because of the lack of Seoul maps on project-gc. I am looking for a challenge checker for at least one cache find in each district in Seoul, South Korea.

Let me know if this can be done, or what I need to do to get you some map data. This is for GC7QTRR

Thank you for all of your help

Wikipedia did not help to decide what is a district but your statistics shows this:

South Korea 경기도 (Gyeonggi-do)
South Korea 서울특별시 (Seoul)
South Korea 인천광역시 (Incheon)
South Korea 제주특별자치도 (Jeju-do)
South Korea 경상남도 (Gyeongsangnam-do)
South Korea 충청남도 (Chungcheongnam-do)
South Korea 부산광역시 (Busan)
South Korea 세종특별자치시 (Sejong)
South Korea 대전광역시 (Daejeon)
South Korea 대구광역시 (Daegu)
South Korea 경상북도 (Gyeongsangbuk-do)
South Korea 강원도 (Gangwon-do)
South Korea 충청북도 (Chungcheongbuk-do)
South Korea 울산광역시 (Ulsan)
South Korea 광주광역시 (Gwangju)
South Korea 전라남도 (Jeollanam-do)
South Korea 전라북도 (Jeollabuk-do)

These are provinces and there seems to be no county data available yet. I think you need this data to make the challenge.

Your right it would be "county" level data for Korea. Right now project GC only has "state" level data for South Korea. Do you know of a way to ask project GC to add this data to their maps? Even if this challenge isn't possible right now it would be interesting to have this data available for us Korean cachers.

Thanks again for your help

I think it is possible to request county level for South Korea because in OpenStreetMap adm level 6 and 8 are also available. The question is which admin level is needed. Can you indicate how many districts there are in Seoul which can probably indicate which admin level is needed. At the moment it is not possible to quote the quantities because the OSM boundaries website is offline.

Seoul has 25 districts or "Gu" in Korean. I pulled this information off of Wikipedia, but I'm sure that the administrative boundaries are available off of OSM as I've downloaded the info there in the past.
Dobong District (도봉구; 道峰區)
Dongdaemun District (동대문구; 東大門區)
Dongjak District (동작구; 銅雀區)
Eunpyeong District (은평구; 恩平區)
Gangbuk District (강북구; 江北區)
Gangdong District (강동구; 江東區)
Gangnam District (강남구; 江南區)
Gangseo District (강서구; 江西區)
Geumcheon District (금천구; 衿川區)
Guro District (구로구; 九老區)
Gwanak District (관악구; 冠岳區)
Gwangjin District (광진구; 廣津區)
Jongno District (종로구; 鍾路區)
Jung District (중구; 中區)
Jungnang District (중랑구; 中浪區)
Mapo District (마포구; 麻浦區)
Nowon District (노원구; 蘆原區)
Seocho District (서초구; 瑞草區)
Seodaemun District (서대문구; 西大門區)
Seongbuk District (성북구; 城北區)
Seongdong District (성동구; 城東區)
Songpa District (송파구; 松坡區)
Yangcheon District (양천구; 陽川區)
Yeongdeungpo District (영등포구; 永登浦區)
Yongsan District (용산구; 龍山區)

Thanks for all your work on this. You've been a ton of help in creating this unique challenge.

The boundary website is back online and unfortunately I discovered that two regions are causing a problem.
On admin level 6 there are two regions with missing information, Jeju-do and Sejong

We can only resort to a pofy checker for Seoul but we need approval from your local reviewer to do so.
In cases like this the local reviewer might accept a county polygons if for the whole country is not available

I'll send an email off to my reviewer then. What is a pofy checker?
Also, I know why jeju and Sejong are giving you problems on the county level. They are both special administrative regions and don't have a county level only town level regions.

Thanks again

The info for Jeju and Sejong is helpfull but I will have a word with PGC-HQ about this. Maybe there is an opening if those places are region/county level.

Thanks, Korea administrative regions are complicated.

Jeju and Sejong are both state level with no county level administrative regions. They have so few people in both places that the regions are only divided by their "myun" or city level. Let me know what else I can do to help out or clarify about Korea in the future.

Thanks again for your time and help.

Actually it looks like the maps are up now, but something went wrong. It seems as if some of the regions used only the English spelling and others used both the English and Korean and it divided those up into two separate regions. Seoul for example was unfortunately divided up into "Seoul" and "서울특별시 (Seoul)" and shows as two distinct regions. There are a few other regions broken similarly.

A few other regions like "부산광역시 (Busan)" due to identical "county" names seem to have stolen regions from other areas.

Hopefully this is just due to the old maps and the new maps overlapping and things will be straightened out soon.

It looks like Seoul is working correct now.
Here is the checker https://project-gc.com/Challenges/GC7QTRR/35396

Please test and confirm
Re: Seoul Challenge Checker

It looks like it's mostly working, however, it's only showing 16 of the 25 "counties" in Seoul on the example log. It may just be a result of their maps still having a few bugs. It's night here now, so I'll check again tomorrow and let you know.

Thanks again

I see the problem in the PGC map
Re: Seoul Challenge Checker

Seoul has 25 districts or "Gu" in Korean. I pulled this information off of Wikipedia as shown at the moment

But if you tell me which counties you want to include just tell me the names
Re: Seoul Challenge Checker

The OSM numbering was added to identify the counties to avoid double names and the result seems to work for 25 districts in Seoul

Here is your output of the checker
